Hey there! It’s me!
Yeah, I know I said I’d start posting again. I will. I’m doing it now.
You may look at the title of this post and think ‘Wait, haven’t you already done this?’, to which I will answer: Yes. Yes I have. But today is a special occasion.
We’re rapidly approaching the one-year anniversary of this blog, by which I mean the anniversary is literally tomorrow. I’ll probably do a special post for that, which we’ll get to at the end of this post. Anyway.
Today is a special occasion in my opinion because Prismism is one year old today. And when I think about it, that’s really what gave me the idea to start this blog in the first place. (which is probably why its anniversary is tomorrow.) I haven’t been the best at posting, but I will do my best from now on.
So, given that today is important, we’re revisiting this album in a slightly different way to how we’ve done it before. Instead of Google Play choosing what songs are on today’s list, I’m gonna do it. Today, I’ll be ranking my personal favourites from this album. It’s gonna be hard. Sacrifices will be made. I may lengthen it so I don’t have to pick only five. But that’s what we’re doing.
Without further ado, let’s get started!
I now present to you… my Top 5!
5. Ruptured
So. This song is the first (fifth, technically) on our list. Despite the fact that picking only 5 is a difficult decision, this one was a no-brainer. Why?
We’ll start at the beginning, with the music, which is incredibly calming, for me. The whole song is. It’s not too loud, not too fast, it’s fairly steady. And we haven’t even gotten into the words yet.
Okay, so maybe the words are a little depressing. But in my opinion, they have a little hope.
We’ll start with the line, ‘Heaven seems so far away/ Some get rejected/ But some get to stay/ Or so they say’. Sure, at first listen this sounds kinda depressing. Except when you get to the ‘so they say’ part. Maybe these people who say only some get to stay are wrong. I realise that there are multiple ways that I could be wrong and it’s even more depressing, but do I care? No.
The reason this song is on my list is because it’s just so soothing. And stress-relieving. And just generally beautiful. I could probably go on, but we’ll stop for the sake of everyone’s sanity.
Also, if you haven’t seen the video, it’s just as beautiful as the song itself. It’s here, if you wanna go watch it.
4. The Queen’s Finest
I don’t think I could actually make this list without this song. I’ve reviewed it on here before, but who cares. I love this song too much for it to not be here.
I think this was the fourth pre-released song after Restless Legs, Prismism, and Boat Accident. At this point, I didn’t have Instagram or anythinglike that, so I didn’t hear when the songs released. I’d check Google Play at least once a week to see if there was a new song, and proceed to get extremely excited if there was, and listen to almost nothing else for about a week.
I had to include at least one of those, and it’s gotta be this one, because it’s just so freaking pretty. Yes, I said that about Ruptured. I could honestly say that about every song on this list. This is the only one that I did before that’s gonna be on this list, because Variety Is Fun™.
Speaking of variety, this song has a lot less synth than some of the others on the album. It’s more guitar-heavy, which in itself makes me happy. That, and it tells a story, which I love. I won’t go too far into it, because I already have in my other post.
What I will do is put a link to the video here, because a) it tells the story and b) I love it.
Sure, this was a short explanation, but whatever. I’ve already gone into this one. The reason it’s on here is because I fell in love with it the first time I heard it, and continue to do so every time I hear it.
3. High Places
Number 3 is our most synth-heavy yet.
So. This song. I’m just gonna skip over the music and head straight to the meaning, because why not. It’s my blog. I can do what I want.
To me, this song has always sounded tired. They know they and an Unnamed Other Person (shall we go S and A this time?) are growing apart, and they’re tired of pretending things are fine. The song ends the same way it begins, with ‘Today will be different, or at least I’ll try.’
So let’s say that this has been happening for a while. S knows they’re growing apart, and they know they won’t be able to go on. A seems to want to fight all the time, S is getting tired of it.
So S realises that they’re done. They don’t feel sad, just tired. They knew this was coming. And surprisingly, they’re fine.
They begin the next day the same way they began the last: ready to start trying.
Why is this on this list? There’s no one reason. But it is, because I love it.
2. Stuck here on earth
Song number 2.
So, there’s no real explanation I can do for this song. Sure, I could try and go into what I think it means, but there’s only really a few lines that stand out to me. So we’ll look at those.
‘This high, these lows/ How it ends, nobody knows.’ This line feels simultaneously optimistic and pessimistic. There are highs and lows, but nobody can really know for sure what’s going to happen. So even if everything seems horrible, you don’t know that things will stay that way.
‘So we pray for the rain, but then we drown in the flood.’ For me, it’s saying that we might get what we ask for, but it might not be what we wanted.
‘All our strain and our sorrows/ Cut off we fly away.’ Once we’re released from all our problems, we’re free.
‘If I fall on my face, will I stand back up?’ If everything goes wrong, can you come back from it? Will you be able to?
There’s not much more to say. There’s more I want to say, but not a whole lot I can. But this song means a lot to me personally, and that’s why it’s here.
1. Hope And Safety
Last song, people. Let’s go.
Compared to some of the others on the album, this song sounds far less edited. It’s gentle and it’s quiet and it’s calming. Good for relieving stress.
I really don’t have much to write about this song. It’s one of my favourites, and it’s helped me through times when I’m just feeling down. To me, it sounds like it’s someone just calling out for help. They need someone to pull them out of the darkness they’re in and back to the light.
Like I said, I don’t have a lot to say. There is a video for this song, which is really nice, and so I’m going to put that here.
Sorry about how short this is. We’ll conclude by saying that this song is number one on my list for a reason.
Honorable Mentions
1. Broken Clocks. (video is here)
2. Gimme Your Heart. (video is here)
Conclusion
So. This is my first full post in a while, and I am sorry about that. I’ll do my best to get better at posting.
Also, I mentioned at the start that it was this blog’s birthday tomorrow! I’ll be doing a special post for that on my 5 favourite artists/songs/things I’ve done so far, so comment what you’d want to see in that.
Aside from that, this was a slightly different post to my usual ones, given that this was my opinion on the best.
That’s all I’ve got for today!
Finally, in the wise words of Brandon Flowers, Dave Keuning, Mark Stoermer, and Ronnie Vanucci:
We hope you enjoyed your stay. It’s good to have you with us, even if it’s just for the day.
Fish brain out.
